Young Jazz Rebels: Slave Riot

Madlib ha in testa tante cose. Non stanco e non contento di essere un eclettico produttore hip hop ha in serbo di andare oltre. Di spingersi verso lo space jazz che appartenne a Sun Ra ("For Brother Sun Ra" è uno dei brani che costellano questo lavoro), di ingraziarsi i fan del Miles Davis più sperimentale e di virare queste influenze con i colori della post produzione più tecnologica.

C'è un vinile che gracchia e che cuce questi 18 frammenti. Madlib propone schizzi di idee ("Ancestors," "The Legend of Mankind," "The Wind"), incompiutezze formali ("On the Run from Mr. Charlie"), possibilità in divenire ("The Sun"), tappeti sonori facili prede per improvvisazioni successive ("Hate/Love"), frammenti di discorsi ("Theme from Illusion Suite"), abbozzi di idee da "brodo primordiale" ("Primal Sound"), scarti e chincaglieria di prim'ordine ("Nappy Headed History") dal groove irresistibile.

Insomma, quello del musicista statunitense è un progetto di incompiutezza tanto fatuo quanto affascinante che sembra essere tutto nella sua testa. Se ascoltato con questo piglio, può anche risultare gradevole. Se vi aspettate discorsi musicali più lineari, lasciate perdere. A meno che non vi piaccia la cultura del campionamento. Largo, quindi, all'estetica del cut up e all'eclettismo musical-snob.
