Eluvium: Similes

In questo nuovo disco sotto la sigla Eluvium, intitolato Similes, il musicista di Portland Matthew Cooper prova a aggiungere alle sonorità ambient cui ci ha abituato il calore della voce. Una questione che spesso si pone per chi lavora su sonorità fortemente evocative e che può cambiare anche radicalmente la direzione della musica, piegandola verso una inevitabile necessità narrativa o comunque verso accenti cantautorali che devono essere padroneggiati appieno.

In bilico tra suoni acustici e elettronici, adottando al canto un tono volutamente poco appariscente e vagando in modo fluttuante e onirico su trame armoniche semplici, Cooper non prende nettamente una posizione, alternando quadretti minimalisti a intimità screziate e malinconiche.

Come spesso accade in questi casi, alla fragilità dei suoni si accompagna una fragilità dell'ascolto, con l'attenzione perennemente in bilico tra il dondolio ammaliante di poche note e un brusco risveglio cullato dal vuoto.

Se si è nel mood giusto, alcune cose funzionano, ma, pur nella loro onesta umanità, dischi come questo rimangono nel grande calderone delle proposte ancora in cerca del giusto spessore.
