Martin Speicher - Georg Wolf - Lou Grassi: Shapes and Shadows

“Please, Confirm!“, il lungo brano iniziale, possiede la lucida e geometrica architettura del classico trio di Ornette Coleman e la visionarietà espressiva del primo Ayler, e determina le coordinate entro le quali si muove l’intero Shapes and Shadows. Il disco licenziato dal trio Speicher/Wolf/Grassi è fedele al credo della libera improvvisazione e, inutile a dirsi, basa gran parte della propria forza attrattiva sull’interplay serrato e telepatico dei musicisti e sulla natura selvaggia delle improvvisazioni. Senza dimenticare la capacità di sorprendere l’ascoltatore.

Come avviene in “Le Star“, dove un basso scuro, denso, vischioso ed una batteria polimorfa ancorano in qualche modo il sax alto di Speicher ad un’esplorazione della forma blues tanto essenziale quanto originale. “Alors! Bill Dit“ è invece ricerca del suono, della risonanza materica degli strumenti, anelito ad un ordine sonoro che sfugga alla convenzionalità. La title track è una pacata conversazione tra clarinetto, basso e percussioni nella quale le forme e le ombre del titolo si formano e si dissolvono in un continuo gioco di rimandi, con i tre improvvisatori che mettono in mostra grande padronanza tecnica e un altrettanto grande sensibilità.

Complessivamente Shapes and Shadows è un buon esempio di come, senza essere necessariamente dei rivoluzionari del genere, si possa fare della libera improvvisazione viva e interessante.
