The Claudia Quintet: September

Pregi e limiti di un gruppo che al suo apparire aveva destato non poca curiosità trovano puntuale, ulteriore conferma in questo nuovo lavoro del quintetto capitanato da John Hellenbeck (tutto suo, come di consueto, il materiale tematico): da un lato una spiccata identità, dall'altro un calligrafismo, una "scheletricità emotiva" che rendono la musica fin troppo algida, asettica, quasi imbalsamata. Non mancano, ovviamente, le deroghe alla regola, e in ogni caso la riconoscibilità è sempre un pregio da non sottovalutare. Ma non per questo un valore ipso facto, contro tutto e tutti.

Ciò premesso, diciamo che September trova i suoi punti di forza - lo si sarà intuito - là dove la musica più si stacca da certi tracciati un po' troppo oleati, iterati, di fatto sclerotizzati: in "Wayne Phases," per esempio, o nei dittici che comprendono, rispettivamente, "Love Is Its Own Eternity" e "Lemons," e più avanti "Interval Dig" e "Mystic Klang"; dove - cioè - l'interazione, la dialettica, fra singolo e collettivo si fa più marcata, viva, e quindi determinante.

Altrove, come detto, prevale un po' troppo scopertamente la bella scrittura, un modus operandi (re)iterato spesso oltre il lecito. Tutto apprezzabile, per carità, ma forse per chi non abbia mai ascoltato prima il Claudia Quintet. Tutti gli altri, magari, si aspetterebbero che un'identità così largamente codificata - e anche ammirata, di primo acchito - riuscisse a scrollarsi di dosso una certa stucchevolezza, quell'insistita autoreferenzialità - tra disco e disco, brano e brano, segmento e segmento - che dopo un po' non possono che nuocere. A chi consuma musica come a chi la produce...
