Ahmad Jamal: Saturday Morning
La magniloquente personalità del pianista emerge soprattutto nella rielaborazione degli standard. Magistrale è in tal senso la personale rilettura di "I'm in the Mood for Love," dove Jamal si diverte a frammentare, punteggiare e rifinire le note originali dimostrando per l'ennesima volta come saper rivitalizzare l'interpretazione di uno standard.
Con la ritmica egli intrattiene un filo di comunicazione quasi telepatico, che gli consente di affrontare con superba verve i diversi contesti musicali. Le atmosfere funkeggianti di "Back to the Future" aprono un disco avvincente, seguite da un gioioso swing e completate dalle morbide sinuosità delle ballad interpretate con il consueto soffio confidenziale.
La formula è nota, anche se le percussioni di Manolo Badrena aggiungono un più disinvolto impianto ritmico di ascendenza caraibica. I brani sono costruiti su ipnotici ostinati ritmici, su cui si innestano sontuose armonizzazioni e dissonanze. Nel loro flusso sonoro viene compendiato il pianismo del leader, la cui scintillante tecnica è tale da far sembrare semplici e facili anche i passaggi più difficili.
