Ray Warleigh: Rue Victor Massé

È una storia che merita di essere raccontata quella del settantenne Ray Warleigh, uomo-ovunque della meglio musica d'oltre Manica che, in oltre quarant'anni di carriera, ha pubblicato due soli dischi a proprio nome: il primo nel '68 (intitolato con scarsa vena immaginifica Ray Warleigh's First Album), il secondo solo oggi grazie alla benemerita PSI Records dell'amico Evan Parker.

Uomo-ovunque, si diceva, perchè la lista delle collaborazioni e degli artisti ai quali il nostro ha prestato la propria maestria è praticamente infinita: da Scott Walker a John Mayall, da Nick Drake (avete presente il flauto di Bryter Layter?) a Dusty Springfield, dai Soft Machine del post-Wyatt a John Stevens, passando per Mike Westbrook, Alexis Korner, Charlie Watts (già, il batterista degli Stones), le big band di Max Roach e Dizzy Gillespie, Stevie Wonder, Kenny Wheeler, la Dedication Orchestra e Marianne Faithfull. Un curriculum mica male, anche se il mondo è pieno di apprezzati turnisti che non hanno nulla di interessante da dire.

Non è però il caso di Warleigh. In duo con il veterano batterista Tony Marsh, l'australiano trapiantato in terra d'Albione si rivela improvvisatore sensibile e intelligente, dotato di una pronuncia sinuosa e scintillante al contralto (non a caso la prima fonte d'ispirazione di Warleigh fu Paul Desmond), mentre al flauto emerge una certa vena tribale che sa tanto di Sam Rivers. Su tutto rifulge un'evidente attrazione per la musicalità, espressa attraverso linee melodiche eteree e carezzevoli, senza mai forzare il fluire dell'ispirazione e indugiando splendidamente sulla cantabilità di alcune intuizioni. Come nell'iniziale "Blues and," dove riecheggia la monkiana "Round Midnight," o nell'infinito rimuginare dei dodici minuti di "For Flute and Percussion," ipnotizzante rito ancestrale.

Registrato in un appartamento di Parigi (il titolo a quello si riferisce) in presa diretta, Rue Victor Massé restituisce all'improvvisazione europea un maestro che troppo a lungo è rimasto dietro le quinte. Bentornato Ray!
