William Parker Bass Quartet featuring Charles Gayle: Requiem
William Parker, Alan Silva, Sirone e Henry Grimes hanno scavalcato a piè pari il problema. Requiem, il nuovo colpo messo a segno da Giorgio Mortarino nelle vesti di produttore, e registrato dal vivo al Vision Festival di New York nel maggio 2004, è basato su una magmatica propulsione bassa e libera su cui svetta il sax iconoclasta e evidentemente ayleriano di Charles Gayle.
L’interesse di questo CD, oltre che musicale [in questo senso il disco, per la verità, è riservato a una ristretta elite di amatori], è filologico, visto che in questo gruppo di contrabbassi a nome di Parker si riuniscono quattro protagonisti assoluti della storia del free e di registrazioni leggendarie dagli anni Sessanta a oggi.
Parker conferma con questo nuovo progetto la sua prolifica poliedricità ma anche una forte personalità musicale. La sua tessitura [prevalentemente pizzicata] spicca sui contrasti tra le linee multiformi di Grimes, Sirone e Silva all’archetto ed è sostanzialmente l’unico elemento ritmico che fa da nocchiere di una libertà assoluta. Trionfa l’impossibilità di tracciare una linea melodica, in un continuo dialogo frammentato, contrastato e centrifugo che ha però sempre una sua eloquenza alle volte ipnotica, altre volte distruttiva.
Il disco è articolato in undici movimenti a ognuno dei quali corrisponde una poesia di Parker stampata all’interno del CD. Tutto il disco, ma in particolare due brani [“For Wilber Morris” e “The Last Song”], nonché la title-track, sono dedicati a Wilbur Morris e Peter Kowald, colleghi di quattro corde che su questa musica avrebbero avuto certamente qualcosa da dire.
