Norberto Tamburrino: Reflection(s) on Monk
Il debito nei confronti del pianista di Rocky Mount appare più evidente nei brani in solitario o a organico ridotto, nei quali le spigolosità e le trame armoniche ardite del monaco del bebop vengono addolcite dalla vena melodica di Tamburrino. Negli altri è la voce del sax tenore di J. D. Allen che buca l'ascolto, così profonda, così classica, quasi aliena rispetto ai tanti muscolari in circolazione.
Sembra un jazz d'altri tempi, evocativo, un poco nostalgico, tranquillizzante; e allora, quasi a confondere le acque, ecco che in "The Room of Illumination" Tamburrino introduce tastiere elettroniche ed effetti e spinge il batterista Bruce Cox verso uno scansione ritmica quasi funky-dub. Come a dire siamo nella classicità, sulla via maestra del jazz ma anche pienamente inseriti nell'attualità.
