Aaron Standon - Pete Brandt - Steve Harris: Red Dispersion
Poi vi è la batteria di Steve Harris, tanto essenziale quanto brillante. Non semplici scansioni ritmiche ma un insieme di pulsazioni che sollecitano i compagni di viaggio, tessono una tela di raccordo leggerissima e resistente, occupano lo spazio con discrezione.
E infine vi è Aaron Standon. Con il sax contralto sa essere incendiario e commovente, asciutto ed espressivo. Con la chitarra elettrica, sì avete letto bene, suona lontano dall’ortodossia jazzistica, un po’ McLaughlin un po’ Bailey, aggiungendo una dimensione spesso visionaria e astratta, a volte materica e metallica.
A togliere Red Dispersion dalle sacche dell’ennesima free session uguale a molte altre, vi è costante, in tutta la registrazione, un forte senso della forma, di narrazione compiuta. Ciascuna delle undici improvvisazione del disco racconta una storia, dispensa emozioni, descrive stati d’animo, tocca le corde profonde dei sentimenti.
Prendete “We Found a Machine“. Parte come una nebulosa in via di formazione, i riverberi e gli impulsi distorti della chitarra ad illuminare uno spazio cosmico che sarebbe piaciuto a Sun Ra. Poi, con uno spostamento impercettibile delle coordinate, il tutto si ricompone in una sorta di blues sonnacchioso e leggermente lisergico. Geniale.
