Sam Reed Meets Roberto Magris: Ready for Reed

Sam Reed, sassofonista di Filadelfia, settantasei anni alla data di quest'incisione (effettuata il 1° novembre 2011), ha conosciuto il suo periodo di maggior fulgore a cavallo fra anni Cinquanta e Sessanta sciorinando un jazz ad alto propellente impastato di R&B e soul. Lo ritroviamo mezzo secolo dopo accanto al pianista triestino Roberto Magris (che potrebbe essere tranquillamente suo figlio, e tutti gli altri sono dei baldi giovinotti all'epoca molto di là da venire), il quale sembra credere parecchio in queste rimpatriate, queste risciacquature nei vari fiumi del più consolidato verbo jazzistico, che in effetti costellano la sua più recente produzione.

Ha senso tutto ciò? Qualcuno avanzerebbe più di un dubbio, ma tant'è: in questi dieci brani (chiude una testimonianza del produttore del disco) che spaziano da penne illustri quali Ellington, Bird, Gene Ammons, Lee Morgan, ecc. a un paio di pagine dello stesso Magris, si respira un jazz ruspante e alquanto monolitico, che di una data stagione (e sue fotostatiche emanazioni) ci riporta un'istantanea fedele quanto fisiologicamente ingiallita dal molto tempo trascorso.

Chi intende il jazz come la riproposizione e l'eterno consolidamento di certi stilemi, dunque, troverà appetitoso pane per i suoi denti. Tutti gli altri possono tranquillamente glissare.
