Ornette Coleman: Quartet Reunion 1990

Come alcuni (o molti) ricorderanno, nell'aprile 1990 Reggio Emilia dedicò una rassegna in più giornate tutta centrata sulla figura di Ornette Coleman (che vi presentò fra l'altro anche la celebre Skies of America). Da quella storica infornata, ecco oggi emergere da qualche scaffale la registrazione (non immacolata, ma comunque più che accettabile, in quanto a resa sonora) del concerto del 24 aprile al Teatro Valli, protagonista il cosiddetto Original Quartet che già aveva effettuato un acclamato tour nell'autunno '87, sulle ali dei consensi riscossi dal doppio In All Languages, che abbinava (uno per LP, anche con alcuni temi in comune) il Prime Time e, appunto, lo storico quartetto che ventotto anni prima, fra maggio e ottobre '59, attraverso album quali The Shape of Jazz to Come e Change of the Century aveva lanciato il primo consistente - e ormai definitivo - guanto di sfida al jazz contemporaneo (in Something Else!!!, dell'anno prima, così come, per motivi diversi, nello stesso Tomorrow Is the Question!, la rivoluzione non appariva ancora del tutto compiuta).

Raccontare la musica (poco meno di un'ora e tre quarti) risulterebbe a questo punto pleonastico: il documento è lì, preziosissimo, anche nel suo suturare, nella discografia ufficiale del maestro di Fort Worth, i citati fasti di In All Languages con i nuovi pregnanti episodi dei secondi anni Novanta, dal duo con Joachim Kühn al quartetto con Geri Allen (due pianoforti, dopo decenni) protagonista di Sound Museum.

Toccante, a più riprese, il suono della famigerata "tromba tascabile" di Don Cherry (specie allorché "strozzata" dalla sordina), altro indimenticato maestro, per certi versi quasi antitetico rispetto a Ornette (dal quale, possiamo ammetterlo senza dover incorrere in accuse di lesa maestà, dal vivo veniva un po' soffocato; anche perché, neanche troppo lontano dalla fine, necessitava di frequenti pause); illuminante, in "Word for Bird," il dialogo fra le due trombe, la loro palpabile dicotomia (al violino Ornette è ascoltabile invece in "If You Could See My Eyes"); sempre maiuscoli gli interventi di Charlie Haden, non di rado in possesso di un'affermatività tutto sommato inusuale; ovunque impeccabile, sapientissimo e perfettamente calibrato, il drumming di Billy Higgins.

Nient'altro da dire: un disco che non dovrebbe mancare in ogni collezione che si rispetti.
