Michael Bisio - Tomas Ulrich: Pulling Strings

Due veterani della etichetta discografica CIMP e del suo modo di interpretare la registrazione (senza missaggio a posteriori) si incontrano, questa volta senza accompagnamento di sorta, in una situazione abbastanza inusuale (ed anche difficile per l'ascoltatore). Il duo contrabbasso/violoncello è certamente per spiriti forti, ma i due intrepidi musicisti riescono a portare a compimento un'impresa musicale che si ascolta bene su un impianto ad altissima fedeltà, dove è possibile apprezzare tutte le possibili vibrazioni degli strumenti, compresa la neve che cadeva fuori dallo studio durante l'incisione di "Call Waiting", brano eseguito in solitudine da Tomas Ulrich.

Nonostante i due musicisti siano di casa nei territori dell'avanguardia presentano anche un paio di brani dalle melodie più accattivanti, come "As the Spirit Moves" di Dom Minasi. Non mancano comunque le improvvisazioni, o "composizioni istantanee", con dediche a Frank Zappa: "sometimes I enjoy starting an improvisation with no pre-conceived concept and then follow the muse where it goes" scrive nelle esaurienti note di copertina Ulrich a proposito di questo brano, dando così un'idea dell'atmosfera esplicitatasi in studio. Anche nel resto del lungo disco la musica si sviluppa per vie intuitive, attraverso linee compositive di vecchia data - il brano di apertura è una nuova interpretazione dell'omonimo brano contenuto in uno dei primi dischi di Bisio, In Seattle, pubblicato dalla Silkheart - e la retorica domanda su come suonerebbe oggi Monk se fosse di casa su uno strumento ad arco trova una possibile risposta.

Oltre che a Frank Zappa e Monk c'è una dedica ai "Two Joe Sopranos", Joe McPhee e Joe Giardullo, con l'imitazione delle loro linee melodiche. Ovviamente c'è ancora molto altro su questo disco, cui forse avrebbe giovato una maggiore compattezza: per chi trova poco digeribile la (troppa) carne messa al fuoco non resta che l'ascolto spezzettato per una musica che è, citando un brano di Bisio, "Its Own Universe".
