Gabriel Alegria: Pucusana

I legami con l'Africa del folklore peruviano della costa incontrano le radici africane del jazz. E' questa l'idea di Gabriel Alegria, compositore e trombettista nato a Lima, quando nel gennaio 2005 forma l'Afro-Peruvian Sextet. L'idea è vincente perché il gruppo ottiene da subito riconoscimenti non solo nell'ambito del Latin Jazz ma anche presso un pubblico non prettamente dedicato, tanto che si formano club, gruppi di fans che interagiscono con la band e spesso la supportano nei tour in giro per il Perù. L'effetto onda lunga arriva anche a New York dove al Tutuma Social Club la band si esibisce ogni week end in un clima di grande festa e partecipazione.

E la musica contenuta in Pucusana? Beh, non si discosta molto dai lavori di qualità del genere. Grande maestria personale, uso di strumenti etnici soprattutto percussivi, freschezza esecutiva, predominanza della componente ritmica, melodie dalla facile presa. Ecco, in Pucusana vi è anche un'attenzione particolare agli impasti timbrici e alle sfumature a dispetto di prestazioni pirotecniche ed esibizioniste. Così come si elevano al di sopra degli altri il primo brano, un traditional intitolato "Taita Guaranguito" e la title track, dove l'interazione tra ritmi folklorici e improvvisazione jazzistica è reale e non semplice incontro di generi. Mentre l'ennesima versione di "My Favorite Things" non aggiunge nulla ad un album che piacerà soprattutto agli amanti del genere.
