Gabriel Vicéns: Point in Time
In scaletta tutte composizioni originali, alcune con delle parti introduttive, dove trovano ampio spazio sia il pianismo essenziale e percussivo di Eduardo Zayas, che soprattutto il sax alto di Jonathan Suazo, protagonista al pari del leader di questa registrazione. I dieci minuti de "La Defencia" ben evidenziano queste caratteristiche, come del resto i molti episodi che vedono dialogare sax e chitarra, ma anche piano e sezione ritmica. Quello prodotto dalla band di Vicéns è un jazz dalle maglie larghe, dove si inseriscono accenni funky, ostinati dal carattere importante, melodie all'occorrenza morbide e orecchiabili. In più gli ospiti presenti tra i credits (David Sánchez al tenore in tre brani e Eddie Gomez al contrabbasso per buona parte del CD) contribuiscono a innalzare il livello artistico dell'album. In particolar modo David Sánchez riesce in "Cuadro" a lasciare tracce del suo passaggio con un intervento molto ben calibrato e denso di fascino.
Vicéns non si dilunga mai più del dovuto nei suoi interventi solistici, e in questo modo riesce a produrre una musica di gruppo perfettamente in equilibrio tra sfondo e primi piani, tra contorno e nucleo espressivo.
