Marius Neset: Pinball

Potremmo parlare di prove tecniche per un grande album, qualcosa che si possa avvicinare allo stato dell'arte attuale nella già corposa carriera di Marius Neset. Pinball, questo il titolo del CD, si lascia apprezzare parecchio, motivi di interesse ce ne sono, più di uno, dalla scrittura brillante e dal respiro orchestrale alla registrazione impeccabile, dal pieno controllo e valorizzazione delle dinamiche alla pregevole attenzione al suono e alle sue diramazioni spesso lussureggianti, dagli arrangiamenti precisi e pertinenti alla qualità dei solisti, ma...

Ma Neset, sassofonista norvegese che fece scalpore nel 2011 appena venticinquenne con l'album GoldenXplosion, mette in Pinball troppa carne sulla brace, e non sempre la cottura risulta a puntino. Non ancora trentenne, apprezzato dalla critica, ricercato da grossi nomi della scena jazz non solo europea, Neset ha forse voluto condensare in questo album le diverse fonti e le mille sfaccettature della sua visione musicale, certamente con apprezzabile sfrontatezza ed entusiasmo giovanile ma pagando in termini di messa a fuoco e coerenza progettuale.

Detto questo, Pinball è un ottimo album dove è assolutamente piacevole tuffarsi nelle atmosfere world dei primi due brani con vibrafono e marimba di Jim Hart in bella evidenza. La title-track danza come un moderno minuetto leggermente schizofrenico, la band gioca a piacimento con il tempo, accrescendo in tal modo la tensione narrativa. In "Music for Cello and Saxophone" e in "Aberhonddu" suono e ambientazione ricordano lo Jan Garbarek più meditativo mentre è difficile non farsi coinvolgere dal climax quasi sabbatico di "Summer Dance."
