Tim Trevor-Briscoe - Nicola Guazzaloca: One Hot Afternoon

Tim Trevor-Briscoe e Nicola Guazzaloca hanno iniziato a suonare insieme a Bologna quasi un decennio fa e di quella città sono diventati tra gli agitatori musicali e culturali più significativi [per la galleria fotografica di un recente concerto bolognese clicca qui]. E sempre in quella città hanno registrato, in un pomeriggio davvero afoso, One Hot Afternoon, dialogo per clarinetto sax alto e pianoforte, al quale bisogna prestare particolare attenzione.

Vi è un termine inglese che ricorre più volte nei titoli del CD ed è gibbering (dal verbo borbottare, farfugliare, parlare in modo incomprensibile), ma il linguaggio utilizzato dai due musicisti è lucido e nitido come pochi, così come la voce dei loro strumenti, viva e palpitante.

E vi è una logica ferrea che sorregge l’intero lavoro, la consapevolezza che la comunicazione e l’intera gamma delle emozioni che ne deriva raggiunge il massimo effetto quando il musicista ha il coraggio di mettersi a nudo, con i suoi dubbi, i suoi farfugliamenti (gibbering?), le sue incertezze, ma anche con la propria franchezza e la propria sincerità.

Benché le quattordici tracce del disco siano sostanzialmente quattordici libere improvvisazioni vi è un formidabile senso narrativo in One Hot Afternoon, ed è quello delle emozioni. Che possono arrivare dalle note grevi e scure come l’ebano del clarinetto di “Introducing the First Gibbering Story“ così come dagli spazi e dalla solennità minimalista di “Clouds Roots“, dalle splendide scorribande sul pianoforte di “Irony for Unprepared Piano“, o dall’ironico e danzante duetto di “Let Cammello Fly“.

La foto di copertina, un dipinto ad opera dei musicisti, rappresenta due volti sfumati con le orecchie così vicine che sembrano sfiorarsi. E in questa immagine di reciproco ascolto, di attenzione verso le altrui sensibilità, è racchiusa l’essenza della filosofia musicale di Tim Trevor-Briscoe e Nicola Guazzaloca.
