Free Range Rat: Nut Club

C'è un po' di tutto in questo album sinceramente free. James Blood Ulmer, Bob Marley, composizioni originali e soprattutto Sun Ra. Non a caso, il gruppo ama definire la propria musica “Cosmosonic Jazz”, in omaggio alla Intergalactic Arkestra del visionario Herman Poole Blount (il vero nome di Sun Ra, appunto). All'ascolto dell'album, tuttavia, ci sembrano più evidenti le reminiscenze di Ornette Coleman e Dewey Redman, soprattutto per la leggerezza della configurazione strumentale (un quintetto senza pianoforte) che consente alla musica di fluire con grande libertà.

Ottime le esposizioni dei temi e, più in generale, le parti scritte. Le trame intrecciate dei tre solisti, che si muovono su un leggero telaio squisitamente ritmico, senza gabbie accordali, permettono infatti combinazioni contrappuntistiche davvero interessanti.

Certo poi, avere tre fiati che si muovono indipendentemente nelle parti più squisitamente improvvisate, complica notevolmente le cose. La libertà sconfina a volte nell'anarchia, i musicisti sembrano perdere il bandolo della matassa. La concentrazione dell'ascoltatore, inevitabilmente, cade.

Nel jazz, di solito non è buona cosa dire che le parti scritte sono meglio di quelle improvvisate. Ma in questo caso è proprio così.
