Joshua Breakstone: No One New

Parte con un bel brio questo album del trio di Joshua Breakstone, un chitarrista americano ultra cinquantenne che sa ben cavalcare il linguaggio moderno della chitarra jazz, sulla scia di Barney Kessel, Joe Pass e Kenny Burrell, con magari un po' ddell'energia di Pat Martino e Jimmy Raney. Il repertorio include due standard, cinque composizioni di Breakstone e un brano del bassista Lisle Atkinson, un esperto musicista che sa accompagnare con buona competenza e se ne esce in assolo con eleganza e timbro scuro al punto giusto.

Alla batteria troviamo il veterano Eliot Zigmund, un ottimo batterista, molto sensibile come tocco e come scansione del ritmo. Lo ricordiamo anche in alcune registrazioni del trio di Bill Evans e successivamente con Michel Petrucciani. Va sottolineato come il clima di questo album non sia molto lontano dal contesto nel quale si muoveva proprio il trio di Bill Evans, una sorta di modello insuperabile per questo tipo di jazz moderno un po' cameristico e alla ricerca dell'eleganza più che del colpo ad effetto.

In questo scenario non possono mancare brani in stile hard bop, escursioni in zona modale e qualche ballad rilassata e piena di espressività. Niente di nuovo sotto al sole, insomma. Musica ben eseguita da tre ottimi professionisti, ma non chiedete loro indicazioni per trovare la strada che si dirige verso il futuro.
