Narcissus: No. 2

Il quartetto belga/olandese Narcissus, che in questo lavoro specifico ospita in due brani il chitarrista argentino Guillermo Celano, pratica un jazz sofficemente antigrazioso, di temperatura spesso cameristica, comunque generalmente quieta, pacata. Le geometrie interne ne risultano premiate in fatto di chiarezza e leggibilità, abbracciando ora un eloquio più discorsivo ("Entre les étoiles"), ora più aereo e sognante ("In Opening").

Eleganza e ariosità non fanno del resto difetto in nessuno dei tredici brani complessivi (a paradigma del totale può esser preso l'ampio "Mitochondrial Eve"), laddove tutto sommato episodiche risultano le lievitazioni verso temperature meno algide ed evaporate (è quanto accade per esempio in "Harlem Meer" e "Royal Slumber").

Ciò che in qualche misura impedisce al lavoro, per altri versi pregevolissimo, di spiccare il volo definitivo è una certa rigidità di base, un minimo di calligrafismo e schematicità, come capita in particolare nel trittico che va da "Final Hour" a "To Norah," laddove nei successivi "Colors in Orval" e "Blue Man with Kite" si ha modo di apprezzare la felice tensione intestina, sospesa quanto nervosa (sempre rapportata al contesto, si capisce).

Lavoro alla fine rigoroso, che denota una chiara linea estetica, perseguita senza tentennamenti.
