Union County Performing Arts Center presents Best of the Garden State Film Festival, featuring award-winning feature length documentary Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison and award-winning short film, The Drummer, on Saturday, October 3, 2009 at 8PM. Tickets are $15 general admission.

Johnny Cash At Folsom Prison is an intriguing documentary that follows the bond that Johnny Cash developed with several prison inmates. It was these experiences and his commitment to advocacy for prison reform that led to the recording of Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison which remains one of the greatest live albums ever made. Cash committed a huge part of his life to advocacy for prison reform.

It was January 1968, a year that would be saturated in violence and historical change. Tucked away in a gray prison cafeteria in Northern California, Cash became deeply involved in transforming the isolated world inside Folsom prison. His easy connection with hard men doing hard time became legendary, and one that would catapult a country singer to international stardom.

Forty years later the album still resonates today with a rawness and authenticity that few recordings have ever achieved. This fascinating film, which features a compelling animation to Cashs “25 Minutes To Go," a song about going to the gallows, will show you a deeply personal insight into the gentle side of this American Troubadour.

Don't miss your chance to see the film, which has been hailed by the press as “illuminating" and “a glorious portrait of the Man in Black."

The evening will also include a brilliant and unforgettable short film, The Drummer. In this 19-minute funny and quirky “love letter to music," a down and out musician gets one last opportunity to realize his dream but must embark on a journey that takes him far beyond his comfort zone.

Garden State Film Festival promotes the art of filmmaking on all levels by showcasing a wide variety of film, video and animated works. Join us as we celebrate two of the “Best of the Garden State Film Festival."
