Album celebrativo, nel rispetto del titolo, e pruriti del tutto prossimi al grado zero: ecco cosa ci offre quest'ennesimo album tardo (incisione dell'aprile 2013) di un monumento come Phil Woods, solista-direttore di una big band che sfoggia un sound d'insieme che più in the tradition non si potrebbe.

È ovvio che non è questa l'idea di jazz che ci piace veder divulgata: una musica prigioniera di un repertorio (nello specifico di una "maniera" compositiva, visto che i temi sono stati scritti quasi tutti da Woods per l'occasione), di griglie esecutive e impasti triti e ritriti, di una perfezione formale che annichilisce anziché esaltare.

Tanto più di questo non c'è da dire, se non per sottolineare al limite quel paio di episodi un po' più eleganti del resto, e cioè "Goodbye Mr. Pepper," possiamo immaginare dedicato a chi, e "Ballad for Hank," altro omaggio ad personam, nel segno del clarinetto. Il resto è più o meno un alternarsi di roboanti mitragliate orchestrali e ripiegamenti alquanto salottieri su scontatissimi climi balladistici. Tutto come da copione.
