Gypsy Schaeffer: New Album

Suonare per il piacere di farlo. Un-due-tre-quattro. Pronti? Via! Non c'è gran che di cerebrale in questo nuovo album dei Gypsy Schaeffer. Si espone brevemente il tema, e poi ampio spazio all'improvvisazione, senza troppi freni o sovrastrutture. Senza gabbie stilistiche. L'album si muove con disinvoltura tra swing e free, tra bop e contemporanea. C'è, in questo vagare tra un genere e l'altro con assoluta naturalezza e padronanza di linguaggio, un che di stupefacente. Ma anche, per certi versi, di avvilente. Il quartetto lascia infatti intravedere enormi potenzialità, sia in fase di scrittura che in fase esecutiva. Tuttavia l'aspetto ludico dell'esecuzione diventa spesso dominante. I musicisti sembrano abdicare al loro ruolo. Perdono il controllo della musica e, invece di guidarla, si lasciano travolgere dal vigore della propria stessa improvvisazione.

Intendiamoci. Questa perdita di controllo è probabilmente voluta. Ci sono ottimi indizi al riguardo. Il nome della band si ispira direttamente a quello di un bordello di Storyville in cui suonava Jelly Roll Morton, e come dicevano i latini, nomina sunt consequentia rerum. Tuttavia, riteniamo che i momenti più riusciti dell'album siano, non a caso, quelli in cui il metronomo scorre più lento. Brani intrinsecamente più riflessivi, nei quali è più facile mantenere il controllo della musica, tenere a bada la propria esuberanza. Ah, se solo riuscissero a farlo anche nei tempi veloci!
