Dag Markhus is a Norwegian jazz drummer and musician based in New York City. Although born and raised in the country of mountains, fjords, and northern lights, it was the excitement and swing of American jazz that captivated his musical ears and heart. Since finishing his master's degree at The Juilliard School in 2014, he has stayed in Manhattan, working as a sideman, collaborator, and occasional soloist. A founding member of the Konrad Paszkudzki Trio, Dag has performed in some of the city's most reputable venues, recorded actively, and accompanied jazz icons such as Barbara Carroll and Bucky Pizzarelli. After signing with the Japanese label Venus Records in 2016, the trio launched an exclusive song book series covering the oeuvres of famed composers Jimmy Van Heusen, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Jule Styne, and Harry Warren. A prolific studio outfit, seven albums have hit the shelves in three years’ time. Other projects include Reeder & Dag (an improvisational piano+snare alliance exploring Tin Pan Alley tunes), in addition to the recording project monikered Arietta, No. Known for his consummate and selfless rhythmic drive, brush artistry, and intimate knowledge of the Great American Song Book, he continues to strive for musical expressions of sophistication and nonchalant grace.
With a warm, wood-paneled vintage glow, a new Christmas collection inhabits the space formerly reserved for top-flight crooners like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett: blending pop and jazz into comfort food for your ears. While few of the next-gen" (as the album's publicity tag puts it) performers here will be known to those unfamiliar with the contemporary New York City scene, their chops are undeniable and the arrangements flattering to the performers' strengths.
