Guido Santoni's music exists in the space between melody and silence, composition and improvisation. A pianist and composer deeply connected to the contemporary European jazz tradition, he has developed a personal language where the piano trio becomes a place of balance, interaction and continuous discovery.

At the center of Santoni's work is the idea that sound is not only what is played, but also what surrounds the notes. His compositions reveal a strong melodic identity, a refined sense of dynamics and a constant search for the expressive possibilities of silence and resonance. The result is a music that combines lyrical depth with the freedom of improvisation.

Santoni's artistic path has been shaped by different musical worlds: classical training, the complex structures of progressive rock, the energy of electric jazz and fusion, and the lasting influence of contemporary jazz masters such as Keith Jarrett, Bill Evans, Paul Bley, Jan Garbarek and Pat Metheny. These elements have been absorbed into a distinctive voice rather than reproduced, creating a style centered on listening, interaction and emotional clarity.

After his debut recording Cinque Atti del Tramonto di Un Giorno, Santoni found his ideal expressive dimension with his trio featuring double bassist Danilo Gallo and drummer U.T. Gandhi. Their collaboration, together with sound engineer Stefano Amerio at Artesuono Studios, produced a series of recordings that trace the evolution of the trio's sound: Inside A Dream (2010), Fit to Fly (2015) and Hill Tribes (2021).

The international recognition of Santoni's work has been particularly significant in Japan, where his albums have established a lasting presence among listeners and critics devoted to audiophile jazz recordings. Inside A Dream received the Jazz Audio Disc Silver Award from Jazz Critique Magazine, while Fit to Fly was selected among the 100 Greatest Jazz Albums of the Jazzit Awards and featured in the Japanese compilation series For Jazz Audio Fans Only.

In 2025, Santoni released Plays New Standards on Terashima Records, expanding his artistic perspective through a personal reinterpretation of Italian and international repertoire. His arrangement of Luigi Tenco's Mi Sono Innamorato Di Te received the Jazz Melody Award from Jazz Critique Magazine, confirming the recognition of his work within Japan's specialized jazz and audio community.

Throughout his career, Guido Santoni has pursued a consistent artistic vision: a music where composition and improvisation are not opposites, but complementary forces. Cinque anni dopo l'esordio su Artesuono con Inside a Dream, esce il secondo lavoro del trio del pianista marchigiano Guido Santoni, affiancato da Danilo Gallo al contrabbasso e U. T. The pianist offers a program of nine original compositions, all written by Santoni, which clearly reveal his passion for highly lyrical themes, shaped by linear, tonally fluid melodies and performed with remarkable precision.

His is an elegant pianistic language, with a distinct echo of Bill Evans, marked by dynamics crafted down to the finest detail and informed both by his classical training and his deep appreciation for the art of the piano trio. It is a coherent musical approach that never compromises his stylistic convictions, as is immediately apparent in the opening track, Sudden Flashes. Here, Santoni creates a harmonious sonic landscape while Gallo and Gandhi weave remarkably delicate rhythmic textures.

Throughout the album, patterns and ideas continually intersect, gradually reaching a level of expressive intimacy that is almost confessional, as in Beyond My Boundary, where subtle tensions add an introspective dimension.

The cover has never told the story of an album better. A stunning black-and-white photograph of a landscape in the Marche countryside. The image’s angular lines and geometric contours seem to reveal something essential about Guido Santoni’s pianistic language.

Accompanied by two trusted collaborators, Danilo Gallo on double bass and UT Gandhi on drums, Santoni’s second project—following Inside a Dream, also released by Artesuono—distills the ideas and musical awareness developed over two years of work.

Do not expect restless or frenetic piano playing here, but rather a sustained and contemplative sound, characterized by calm and an almost obsessive attention to nuance, accents, and dynamics. The influence of Bill Evans is palpable, even though Santoni’s melodic lines are distinctly contemporary and immediately engaging.

It is like a small geometric drawing gradually taking shape. The title track, Fit to Fly, is a case in point: its understated opening prepares the ground for the development of the theme, simple yet effective. Gallo and Gandhi complete the sketch with taut rhythmic lines, animated by a vigorous sense of interplay.

Also noteworthy is Beyond My Boundary, where the improvisation becomes more urgent and tenacious. Santoni responds to the many impulses coming from his two partners, opening himself to a rougher and more tactile pianistic language.

The rest of the album remains within this carefully cultivated atmosphere: an almost classical work in its own way, one that reconciles us with the world through music that is simple, immediate, and almost instinctive.

The atmosphere that permeates Inside a Dream recalls the world of Bill Evans’ great piano trios: the tenderness of the phrasing, simple melodies supported by sophisticated harmonic structures, and notes that acquire meaning through subtle shades of expression. Here, improvisation becomes a gradual exploration of human emotion—unhurried, understated, yet profound and essential.

Equally striking is the musicians’ remarkable interplay, particularly considering that the three had never played together before this recording. The double bass is far more than a rhythmic foundation; it becomes an equal voice in an intense and stimulating dialogue with the piano.

Gandhi, for his part, creates the ideal conditions for these interpretive journeys to unfold through a subtle interplay of brushes. The melodic dimension of the drums remains prominent, while the rhythmic element expands through delicate impulses and the gentle resonance of leather and metal.
