Dopo la felicissima perentesi africana del 2005 (documentata dal vivo in Live in Addis ma gia' presente in parte su Afro-cubism) l'orchestra di Russ Gershon celebra i 25 anni d'attività con un nuovo album, l'undicesimo. È certamente un bel traguardo, su cui nessuno avrebbe scommesso quando l'organico si mise assieme, quasi per gioco a casa del sax tenore, complici "una cassa di birra e degli spartiti".

Gershon è un bandleader e arrangiatore versatile e aperto, che guarda con interesse alle musiche popolari e regala in ogni album emozioni diverse senza tradire un'estetica legata ai concetti di Gil Evans e soprattutto di Thad Jones/Mel Lewis: arrangiamenti sostenuti da un palpabile swing o ritmi danzanti, che fondono agili giochi di sezione e spigliati interventi solisti.

In questo bel lavoro la fonte d'ispirazione più evidente torna ad essere, come nel citato Afro-cubism, la musica latina in generale ed afrocubana in particolare, come testimonia già il secondo brano "Beaucoups Kookoo" ed i successivi "Coolocity," "Ropa Loca," "Latin Dimensions," "Suriname" che presentano, nella sintesi, climi e gradazioni anche molto diversi.

Tra gli altri temi ricordiamo "The Petrograd Revision" dal contagioso funky groove e il delicato, impressionistico "Portrait of Lindsey Schust" dove traspare l'amore per la lezione evansiana. Gli interventi solisti sono sempre di prim'ordine: spiccano quelli di Tom Halter alla tromba, Joel Yennior al trombone e Godwin Louis mentre un plauso va all'eccitante lavoro ritmico di Pablo Bencid e Vicente Lebron.
