Charles Lloyd Quartet: Mirror
Quindi, non ci sorprende per nulla se licenzia per ECM un disco come Mirror, suonato benissimo, per carità, ma che non aggiunge nulla alla sua recente produzione. Un disco nel quale compaiono un paio di spiritual, una manciata di standard e composizioni di Lloyd già sentite in precedenti album. L'idea è quella di dare nuova vita ai dodici brani in questione attraverso la sensibilità e la freschezza di un quartetto rinnovato.
Operazione riuscita solo parzialmente perché la personalità di Lloyd, abbinata alla tendenza verso una musica un pò troppo accomodante, soffoca visibilmente le qualità e lo spirito di iniziativa dei suoi formidabili compagni di viaggio. Sentire Jason Moran, pianista di valore assoluto, dall'estetica musicale splendidamente in bilico tra tradizione e modernità, limitarsi a qualche sortita di puro abbellimento o a qualche armonizzazione di raccordo, non riempie certo il cuore di gioia.
Fanno per fortuna eccezione "Lift Every Voice and Sing" e "Being and Becoming, Road to Dakshineswar With Sangeeta". Qui il quartetto dispiega al meglio le sue potenzialità (emerse con prepotenza nel precedente album dal vivo Rabe De Nube (ECM - 2008), liberando fantasia e creatività e facendo intendere quello che Mirror avrebbe potuto essere.
