Hot Tune: Magique

In realtà, dietro l'enigmatica sigla Hot Tune e nonostante l'albionico sigillo Slam, si nasconde un italianissimo quartetto, alla cui testa ritroviamo, dopo l'incantevole Frammenti di scrittura prematura, il clarinettista romano Alberto Popolla.

Musicista evidentemente onnivoro e curioso, Popolla, che firma tutti gli originali in scaletta, con Magique abbandona il tenero, e acustico, esotismo del lavoro precedente, aggiungendo alle consuete pennellate folk - da qualche parte fra i Balcani e il Medio Oriente -, evidenti richiami al prog - il grigio e il rosa dei Caravan -, e altrettanto palesi omaggi al free storico - e qui basterebbe la cover della mitica "Odwalla" di Roscoe Mitchell -.

Ne risulta un percorso d'ascolto spiazzante, disseminato di curve cieche che nascondono piacevolissime sorprese. È il caso della suadente "Istvan," nenia speziata che ben figurerebbe in uno dei "Filmworks" di Zorn, della contorta "Bar," che si apre all'insegna di Monk per poi sfociare in un delirio prog di riff, unisoni e assoli sghembi, o della travolgente "Zoncolan," impreziosita da un prologo a cappella condotto dalle tre ance e da quello che forse è il miglior solo del disco, pennellato con spigolosa inventiva dal soprano di Eugenio Colombo.

Prezioso il lavoro della chitarra di Andrea Moriconi, i cui graffi distorti riescono a riscattare dalla banalità anche i brani meno convincenti ("Inverno"); mentre fra gli ospiti, oltre al già citato Colombo, spicca la voce inquieta e ammaliante di Marilena Paradisi (splendido il duetto con il clarinetto del leader in "Istvan," entusiasmante il delirio scatenato in "Hot Tune").

Insomma, una conferma per un artista in crescita, dal quale ormai è lecito aspettarsi molto.
