In the Country: Losing Stones, Collecting Bones

Nell'entropico compenetrarsi dei linguaggi musicali, che il classico piano trio della tradizione jazzistica si incroci sempre più strettamente con i toni crepuscolari di un certo folk e pop è movimento abbastanza naturale. Se a questo aggiungiamo la mai nascosta preferenza di molti musicisti e ascoltatori europei per proposte in cui a emergere siano le componenti melodiche e armoniche [e un tocco di immagine romantica], non è difficile rendersi conto del perché formazioni come l'Esbjorn Svensson Trio - ma anche, mutatis mutandis, i nostri Doctor 3 - o i norvegesi In the Country si muovano entro queste coordinate.

Giunti al secondo disco dopo This Was the Pace of My Heartbeat, gli In The Country sono guidati dal pianoforte di Morten Qvenild, componente del duo Susanna & The Magical Orchestra, con la ritmica di Roger Arntzen e Pål Hausken a basso e batteria.

Anche in questo Losing Stones, Collecting Bones a prevalere sono toni crepuscolari, intimi, che ruotano intorno a temi semplici, a piccoli movimenti accordali di natura prevalentemente folk [parola che a volte corre in eufemistico soccorso di idee un po' banalotte] appena increspati da una brezza che solleva le spazzole del batterista.

L'ironia fatica a frasi largo, anche in episodi come "Everyone Live Their Life", con il suo coro sghembo e apotropaico guidato dal cantante svedese Stefan Sundstrom: tutto rimane come trattenuto, scorre dietro un vetro, lanciando bagliori incantatori, ma tenendo chiunque a debita distanza, impedendo con mossa quasi beffarda di affondare nella stessa malinconia iterata delle note.

Illustre ospite, il chitarrista Marc Ribot compare in due brani, trascinando dietro sé polvere americana a ricoprire i silenzi ["Torch Fishing"] o inseguendo fanstasmi di minimalismo cinematografico ["Can I Come Home Now"].

L'ascolto è piacevole e anche a tratti suggestivo, ma si tratta comunque di una musica elegantemente fragile, laddove l'elemento di fragilità [che in sé potrebbe costituire un interessante pregio] è scambiato troppo spesso per poesia. Qualche recensore - burlone o incompetente, a voi la scelta - ha evocato il nome di Paul Bley [secondo lo stesso ragionamento, chiunque ficchi una sordina harmon dentro la tromba dovrebbe essere un piccolo Miles!]: noi preferiamo surfare sulle note di Losing Stones, Collecting Bones con la stessa leggerezza con cui ci vengono porte... un passaggio veloce e spruzzato di sole e viaaa!
