William Parker: Long Hidden: The Olmec Series
Nella prima parte troviamo William Parker in solo. Al contrabbasso, ci mostra ancora una volta la leggerezza e la luminosità del proprio incedere (ricordiamo il motto music is light, light is music). Al doson ngoni, il nostro traccia percorsi più eterei ed evocativi, grazie anche alla timbrica assai tribale dello strumento.
Nella seconda parte dell'album, troviamo il nostro in compagnia di un gruppo di giovani merenguisti, e di due figure storiche (sebbene sottovalutate e misconosciute) come Dave Sewelson (già membro dei Microscopic Septet) e Todd Nicholson (spesso al fianco di Billy Bang).
Ed è, questa, sicuramente la parte più interessante. L'impronta latina è forte, ma l'oleografia è lontana. I fiati sono possenti, la fisarmonica è il fulcro della musica e le ritmiche articolate conferiscono buon vigore. E curiosamente, per se stesso Parker ritaglia un ruolo che definire marginale è forse eccessivo, ma che certo non è da protagonista. Un ruolo al servizio del gruppo, come si suol dire, che evita qualsiasi protagonismo e che concede ampi spazi ai suoi giovani (ed anche a quelli meno giovani) compagni di viaggio.
