Renata Friederich Close Up: Lonely Woman

Ispirata dall’ascolto del classico Lonely Woman di Ornette Coleman e da una serie di dipinti, la cantante svizzera Renata Friederich (clicca qui per leggere la recensione del suo precedente lavoro Moon Moods) ha realizzato questo lavoro di “ritratti femminili”, dalle atmosfere oscure e suggestive, ecletticamente vicine ora ai classici del jazz, ora a forme dell’avanguardia europea.

Timbro di voce sicuro e schietto, la Friederich si avvale per la buona riuscita del lavoro dell’eccellente collaborazione del pianista Markus Portenier, a suo agio tanto nei passaggi cristallini d’estrazione neoclassica, quanto in quelli più astratti e meditativi, e del contrabbassista Rätus Flisch, espressivo all’archetto e solido nel pizzicato. I due costituiscono un’eccellente supporto per la cantante, che ne sfrutta solo in parte le qualità, improvvisando con un uso creativo della voce forse solo in alcuni dei “sipari” che inframezzano i dieci quadri musical-lirico-pittorici.

Tra le tracce più riuscite, l’ottima rilettura del brano ornettiano "Lonely Woman" (“illustrato” nel booklet da un volto femminile dipinto da Rolf Lenzin, marito della Friederich, pittore e autore di gran parte dei testi dei brani) e “Frida” (ispirato a un dipinto di Frida Kahlo), quasi un talking nel quale sono esemplarmente protagonisti i due partner, che usano i rispettivi strumenti pennellando di suoni la narrazione vocale.
