Max Ionata - Luca Mannutza: Lode 4 Joe (Tribute To Joe Henderson)

E' senz'altro doveroso tributare una lode a Joe Henderson, musicista che - come giustamente scrive Maurizio Gammarco nelle note di copertina - ha sintetizzato (insieme a Shorter) la lezione del modalismo mettendola al servizio di inediti giri armonici.

Ionata e Mannutza focalizzano la loro attenzione sul repertorio proveniente dai primi album registrati dal sassofonista per la Blue Note. Album nei quali quanto esposto qui sopra si manifesta al suo massimo grado. Album realizzati in quintetto e sestetto e quindi particolarmente briosi ed energici. Muscolosi, dice sempre Giammarco.

La rivisitazione in duo è intrinsecamente più intimista. E però l'interpretazione di Ionata e Mannutza non manca affatto di forza e l'idea sottesa alle composizioni di Henderson emerge sempre chiaramente. Musica asciutta, essenziale, sempre permeata da un forte senso della melodia e che presta una particolare attenzione al suono, alla voce strumentale.

E i due brani originali presenti nell'album (uno a firma del pianista, l'altro del sassofonista) mostrano non solo che la lezione del maestro Henderson è stata ben compresa, ma anche che Ionata e Mannutza hanno una felicissima vena compositiva.
