WHO Trio: Live At Jazz Festival Willisau 2023

Ci sono molti modi per affrontare/reinterpretare standard e songs, recitano le accurate note di copertina, ma affrontare Duke Ellington richiede uno step ulteriore, pena lo scivolare nel deja vu, nel già sentito, tra stereotipi o stravolgimenti fuori luogo. WHO Trio, formazione che da oltre venticinque anni scandaglia i meandri della libera improvvisazione e dei suoi legami con la tradizione, lo fa alla sua maniera.

" Abbiamo semplicemente cercato di suonare questo meraviglioso materiale -afferma Gerry Hemingway -con entusiasmo e gioia, traendo ispirazione da elementi basilari delle composizioni di Ellington come il ritmo armonico, la profonda sensibilità nel miscelare maggiore e minore, l'uso incredibile dei riffs."

Intrigante e insolita risulta "l'impaginazione" dell'album : ciascuno degli otto titoli ellingtoniani (pescati anche dal repertorio meno noto del Duca) è affiancato da altrettante «Reimagination», improvvisazioni che nei primi quattro brani precedono e nei successivi tre , dopo un breve interludio, seguono le composizioni originali.

Unica eccezione «Fleurette Africaine» presentata in magnifica solitudine. L'eleganza intrinseca della composizione viene ulteriormente esaltata dal processo di sottrazione applicato, dal minimalismo interpretativo nel quale il trio rivela la propria arte sopraffina, con il tocco straniante del parlato di Hemingway ad aumentarne il fascino.

La commistione tra «Reimagination» e composizioni originali funziona a meraviglia, le improvvisazioni ora selvagge ora astratte conservano tratti ritmici e melodici tipici delle songs ellingtoniane che a loro volta vengono spesso interpretate con una libertà creativa che ne conserva solo l'ossatura e l'essenza spirituale. Significativo esempio di tale approccio è «Reimagination # 4-Self Portrait of the Bean», quasi dodici minuti nei quali furore e dolcezza convivono meravigliosamente. Splendidi i musicisti, mai sopra le righe, in serrato ascolto reciproco, e in costante spinta creativa.
