Antonio Sanchez & Migration: Lines in the Sand
Sanchez ricorda nelle note di copertina di Lines in the Sand che lui stesso un tempo fu un immigrato: nel 1993 partì da Città del Messico per andare a Boston a studiare al Berklee College of Music, diventando, anni più tardi, uno dei jazzisti di maggior successo (è sua, ad esempio, la colonna sonora di "Birdman" del regista Alejandro Gonzales Inarritu che gli è valsa un Golden Globe) e guadagnandosi, fra l'altro, anche la cittadinanza americana. Ma quella era un'altra America: oggi c'è un muro a far intendere bene a chiunque che i tempi dell'american dream sono decisamente finiti.
Sanchez prova, dunque, a risvegliare le coscienze con un lavoro corale, ricco di insinuanti melodie e di grande accessibilità. A fargli da spalla i Migration, solido quartetto di professionisti dove spicca la brillante vocalist Thana Alexa. Una fusion gentile, quasi sommessa, con venature progressive che ricorda, in alcuni passaggi, i lavori strumentali del francese Patrick Forgas con la sua Forgas Band Phenomena, guarda caso un altro batterista-compositore.
Tra i brani più riusciti, ”Long Road”, dove Sanchez può fare sfoggio del suo drumming fantasioso e incisivo, mai sopra le righe, e ”Bad Hombres Y Mujeres”, contraddistinto da un groove trascinante con i solisti impegnati a improvvisare su un tema complesso continuamente spezzato e ripreso.
