Phil Haynes & Free Country: Liberty Now!

Dopo le registrazioni di American Trilogy (Voll. I, II, III) e il disco dal vivo, l'avventura Free Country—il quartetto cordofono assemblato dal batterista e compositore Phil Haynes nel 2013 —sembrava giunta al termine. Ma due eventi—indipendenti tra di loro—hanno portato di nuovo il gruppo in studio di registrazione: l'esito (definito terribile da Haynes & C.) delle elezioni presidenziali USA 2024 e la scomparsa del trombettista Herb Robertson, amico e collaboratore di tutti i membri del gruppo.

Ecco allora Liberty Now! un doppio album con un CD di composizioni originali nel quale il dolore per la scomparsa dell'amico si trasforma in urgenza espressiva e ricerca della bellezza e un secondo cd che riprende  alcuni dei brani più significativi del catalogo del quartetto, improntati all'impegno e alla ribellione civili. Da buon ensemble paritario e democratico ciascuno dei musicisti contribuisce con proprie composizioni nel primo CD, ognuno apportando concezioni e sensibilità peculiari, che convergono inesorabilmente verso il focus estetico del gruppo maturato nel corso del tempo. Ossia la tradizione della musica americana aggiornata e interpretata da musicisti abituati a flirtare con il free, con l'avant jazz, con il downtown newyorkese e quindi ad affrontare qualsiasi tipo di musica con spirito avventuroso. 

Diverso il discorso che riguarda il secondo CD che assembla songs che hanno segnato a loro modo  la storia  della musica, ritroviamo così brani della tradizione accanto ai Beatles,Louis Armstrong e Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin e Aaron Copland. Lontano dall'essere un patchwork senza un filo rosso estetico ( quello concettuale c'è eccome) proprio questa varietà di stili e di epoche esalta ulteriormente l'alchimia del quartetto, un'urgenza espressiva ritrovata, i protagonisti in gran forma, la classe e l'aplomb di Drew Gress, la vena melodica leggermente disturbata di Jim Yanda,  la versatilità del leader. 

Ma è la figura di Hank Roberts che emerge prepotente lungo le due ore abbondanti dell'incisione. Il violoncello incide come una lama e sa essere melodioso come un canto di sirena, mentre la voce, apparentemente fragile, ti entra sottopelle e raggiunge i punti più remoti dove albergano le emozioni. Come nella resa di "What's Going On" stilisticamente vicina all'originale di Marvin Gaye ma con un'impronta personale e la conclusiva "What a Wonderful World" con il recitativo di Roberts che fa accapponare la pelle.
