MUSICIAN Born:

Hank Roberts

Even in a parallel universe where jazz cellists are as common as tenor madmen and trumpet-blowing boppers, Hank Roberts would be utterly unique. Over his nearly four-decade career, Roberts has forged a compelling original voice on the cello, encompassing abstract improvisation and soulful folk melodies, intricate new-music compositions and vigorous rock songs. Roberts’ latest CD, Everything Is Alive, features three long-time compatriots: guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Jerome Harris, and drummer Kenny Wollesen. The 2012 Winter & Winter release continues the cellist’s relationship with producer Stefan Winter, which stretches back through the bulk of Robert’s discography

Ivo Perelman: Deep Resonance

Read "Deep Resonance" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Saxophonist Ivo Perelman is an exceptional innovator, even in a genre where originality and inventiveness are the norms. Mark Harvey Group, Thumbscrew & Rez Abbasi

Read "Mark Harvey Group, Thumbscrew & Rez Abbasi" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

No matter who pianist Russ Lossing chooses for his various trio projects, they always work! His new Mood Suite, with Mark Helias on bass and Eric McPherson on drums is excellent. Although Lossing has played with Helias and McPherson over the past two decades, they've never played as a trio before. Musical osmosis must work, because ...

Gordon Grdina: Safar-E-Daroon

Read "Safar-E-Daroon" reviewed by Mike Jurkovic

Safar e Daroon germinates from its dark, submerged interiors immediately and immediately brings you into the light. But a light of what? A lover's lamp? A hushed arena? An Australian wildfire? Take your pick and let your mind go. It's all going to happen and does so in spades on oudist Gordon Grdina's second go-round with ...

Filippo Vignato/Hank Roberts: Ghost Dance

Read "Ghost Dance" reviewed by Ian Patterson

Usually the watering hole comes after a gig, but there would have been enough wine to float a ship at this concert by cellist Hank Roberts and trombonist Filippo Vignato, held as it was in the Vigne di Zamò Winery in North-Eastern Italy. The interplay between the veteran American and the younger Italian on these nine ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
