MUSICIAN Born:

Hank Roberts

Even in a parallel universe where jazz cellists are as common as tenor madmen and trumpet-blowing boppers, Hank Roberts would be utterly unique. Over his nearly four-decade career, Roberts has forged a compelling original voice on the cello, encompassing abstract improvisation and soulful folk melodies, intricate new-music compositions and vigorous rock songs. Roberts’ latest CD, Everything Is Alive, features three long-time compatriots: guitarist Bill Frisell, bassist Jerome Harris, and drummer Kenny Wollesen. The 2012 Winter & Winter release continues the cellist’s relationship with producer Stefan Winter, which stretches back through the bulk of Robert’s discography

Francesca Naibo: Namatoulee

Read "Namatoulee" reviewed by Angelo Leonardi

Hermine Deurloo: Riverbeast

Read "Riverbeast" reviewed by Dan Bilawsky

On Riverbeast, Dutch harmonica player Hermine Deurloo winds her way through a wide variety of musical settings. And with Kevin Hays manning the piano, Tony Scherr holding it down on guitar and bass guitar, and Steve Gadd behind the kit, there's no place she can go where a comfortable feel won't follow. The album ...

Ben Goldberg, Jason Robinson, Orchestre National De Jazz and More

Read "Ben Goldberg, Jason Robinson, Orchestre National De Jazz and More" reviewed by Maurice Hogue

This episode is a little “reed" heavy with debuts of new recordings by Jason Robinson and his quartet, Ben Goldberg and Kenny Wollesen's Music for an Avant-Garde Massage Parlor, Portugal's José Lencastre, Rachel Musson from England, and I.P.A. from Scandinavia, plus several other saxophonically inclined folks. The Orchestre National De Jazz from France tackles the music ...

Sting: An English (Jazz-)Man In New York - Part 2

Read "Sting: An English (Jazz-)Man In New York - Part 2" reviewed by Ludovico Granvassu

Although Sting is mostly known for his solo career and, before that, for fronting one of the most epic band of all times, The Police, his love for jazz has been a common thread throughout his career. His jazz sensibility became more prominent when he started his solo career with the album The Dream of the ...

Ivo Perelman: Deep Resonance

Read "Deep Resonance" reviewed by Hrayr Attarian

Saxophonist Ivo Perelman is an exceptional innovator, even in a genre where originality and inventiveness are the norms. A stalwart of the international creative music scene, Perelman excels in small, intimate group settings. His collaboration with the string trio Arcado, the stimulating Deep Resonance, is a dramatic and introspective recording which draws equally on free improvisation ...

Ivo Perelman with Arcado String Trio: Deep Resonance

Read "Deep Resonance" reviewed by Troy Dostert

Throughout his long and prolific recording career, Ivo Perelman has recorded with a large number of free improvisation's leading lights. Pianist Matthew Shipp stands at the top of the pile, with over two dozen joint appearances; Joe Morris, Gerald Cleaver, Whit Dickey, William Parker, and many others help comprise the long list of associates he's maintained ...

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, shelter in place and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary effort that will help musicians now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the bottom right video ad). Thank you.
