Vein feat. Dave Liebman: Lemuria Live
E infatti anche questo Lemuria Live, sei lunghi brani nei quali l'improvvisazione e il dinamismo la fanno da padroni, è un disco notevole. L'impianto è classico, come segnalato sia i tre omaggi di Brubeck e Gershwin che le altre tre composizioni, dei fratelli Arbenz e di Liebman, di impianto tradizionale e dilatate per offrire spazi amplissimi all'improvvisazione.
Ed è quest'ultima che rende vibrante e intenso l'intero lavoro, il quale presenta uno stile ben caratterizzato e poggiato su due cardini: espressività e dinamismo.
La prima viene sviluppata da Liebman con il suo ben noto linguaggio nervoso, ricco di reiterazioni, variazioni e - specie al soprano - peculiari distorsioni del suono tese a drammatizzare le atmosfere. Ma viene anche esasperata da Michael Arbenz con un approccio alla tastiera originale, liquidamente percussivo, e da suo fratello Florian con un drumming aggressivo.
Il secondo si avvale ancora dell'impeto del batterista, ma vive soprattutto dell'inesauribile spinta del sassofonista, che in "Lemuria" ed "Evolution" è trascinante, ma che è soprattutto capace di trasformare e rendere propulsive anche "I Love You Porgy" e "Summertime" (peraltro aperta splendidamente da un solo del contrabbasso di Lähns).
In tutto ciò, è solo apparentemente casuale che il brano forse più affascinante sia anche il più pacato, cioè "Climbing": esso riassume ed espone infatti nitidamente le qualità che negli altri brani eruttano violentemente, permettendone il più pieno godimento.
