Giordano Criscenzo - John Stowell: Lament

Quello degli standards è un territorio insidioso; da una parte l'avventurarsi in repertori ampiamente collaudati fornisce tranquillità e sicurezza a chi suona, dall'altra il doversi necessariamente confrontare con tutti quelli che si sono già cimentati nella stessa impresa espone al rischio di confondersi nella massa, a meno di fornire un'interpretazione originale o quanto meno personale capace di esprimere passione o slancio emotivo. Lament, disco realizzato dalla coppia di chitarristi formata dall'americano John Stowell e l'italiano Giordano Criscenzo, pecca appunto di mancanza di passione e slancio, con un approccio agli standard convenzionale ed accademico (entrambi i chitarristi sono molto attivi nel campo della didattica).

I temi, quasi tutti illustri e ben conosciuti, con qualche escursione verso la musica brasiliana, sono esposti in modo piatto e sviluppati senza guizzi e invenzioni. Anche dal punto di vista prettamente strumentale le due chitarre suonano senza provocare alcuna emozione; la base per gli assoli viene fornita a turno da un accompagnamento prevedibile, e viene a mancare quello stimolo reciproco che dovrebbe essere il fondamento di qualsiasi duo. I due chitarristi sembrano ignorare tutto quello che è successo alla storia del loro strumento negli ultimi 40 anni, generando un disco inutile ed anacronistico. E per una volta, la durata scarsa del CD non rappresenta una nota negativa.
