While there's a long list of jazz performers recording with strings, it's unusual for those recordings to have the sheer elegance of tenor saxophonist Joshua Redman's "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Featured on his Walking Shadows album, the tune's every melodic line has just the right amount of tone, range and redirection to qualify as transcendental beauty. And the strings and backing trio sway just enough to caress and enliven the lead line.
