Gianmario Liuni: Jazz Variations

Avvezzo a lavori concettualmente originali (ricordiamo tra gli altri Il soggetto è il mare e Conversation with Africa), Gianmario Liuni presenta stavolta un lavoro di variazioni per trio pianistico jazz e quartetto d'archi. Già la composizione della formazione e il tipo di programma annunciano la cifra stilistica, che fonde ispirazioni classiche e jazz, come già altre volte fatto da Liuni.

Il tema di partenza, come nella tradizione classica, viene esposto nella prima traccia, per poi essere ripresentato con tempi, ritmi, armonie e modi diversi, ma anche arricchito da altri temi che vi si intrecciano e variato dalla differenziazione della formazione, ora il trio - nel quale incide che Ricci usi il contrabbasso o il basso elettrico - ora il quartetto, ora le due formazioni contemporaneamente - che spiccano in una delle tracce più belle, "Tranquilla nostalgia".

Le atmosfere sono anch'esse assai diverse l'una dall'altra e, da questo punto di vista, i titoli dei brani sono sufficientemente descrittivi del clima che si incontra in ciascuno. Rimane sullo sfondo un forte lirismo e uno spirito narrativo di derivazione classica, caratteristico dello stile di Liuni, che è presente anche in quei brani in cui prevale la componente jazzistica.

A rafforzare l'identità formale del lavoro, le ultime tre tracce costituiscono una composizione classica per quartetto d'archi, che conserva però al suo interno un riferimento al tema delle variazioni.

Complessivamente, il lavoro è apprezzabile per singolarità, qualità realizzativa e fruibilità. E - come altri di Liuni - rappresenta un modo sobrio ma elegante e personale di mediare tra il mondo della classica e quello del jazz.
