Today's Rediscovery? Jan Garbarek Group's Wayfarer, the saxophonist's 1983 ECM recording with Bill Frisell, Eberhard Weber and Michael DiPasqua. I was fortunate enough to have seen this group in a small club while on a trip to Boston the same year, and I still remember it to this day.
Most people seem to prefer the previous group record, Paths, Prints (ECM, 1982), with Jon Christensen in the drum chair, but Wayfarer's three wonderfully atmospheric, extended piecesthe opening "Gesture," second side opener "Pendulum" and extraordinary title trackgive this release the tiniest edge over Paths, Prints for me.
What a group....what a record.
So, what are your thoughts? Do you know this record, and if so, how do you feel about it?

All About Jazz & Jazz Near You were built to promote jazz music: both recorded albums and live events. We rely primarily on venues, festivals and musicians to promote their events through our platform. With club closures, limited reopenings and an uncertain future, we've pivoted our platform to collect, promote and broadcast livestream concerts to support our jazz musician friends. This is a significant but neccesary step that will help musicians and venues now, and in the future. You can help offset the cost of this essential undertaking by making a donation today. In return, we'll deliver an ad-free experience (which includes hiding the sticky footer ad). Thank you!
