James Brandon Lewis, Gebhard Ullmann, Ivo Perelman & Paul Dunmall

Does the saxophone rule jazz these days? It could look that way if this episode of One Man's Jazz was submitted as an example. So many great reed players in this one, starting with James Brandon Lewis who continues to cut a wide swath in the fields of improvised music these days. He and his quartet open and close the show with tracks from his new Omni. Cue the positive reviews. Germany's Gebhard Ullmann is a major force in European free jazz, but he also makes original music with New Yorkers as the new Coffee and Berriesdemonstrates. Always in the forefront these days is Ivo Perelman; he's joined on Synesthesia by greatness—William Parker, Matthew Shipp & Bobby Kapp. England's Paul Dunmall is another example of consistency and passion, leading a younger crew on Afraid To Speak, and he shows up on fellow tenor Alan Skidmore's That's Our Life when they were in Tenor Tonic, a band that never recorded. The Jazz In Britain label patched together snippets from rehearsals and live performances to document their history. Other wonderful saxophonists show up too: Spain's Liba Villavecchia, Finland's Sami Sippola in a new one from Hot Heros, Caleb Wheeler Curtis, and the important Marion Brown. Reedy indeed but no horns on the new Fred Hersch/Mick Goodrick release on ECM or the new Mat Maneri Quartet releases, just exceptional music.
