Installing Grammarly

The editorial staff strongly recommends all staff writers download and install the free version of Grammarly (the AI writing assistant). Grammarly plugs into your browser, your text editor and email, and will not only save you time but also reduce the editorial time it takes to prepare your article for publication.

The editorial staff is here to support you, but we are not here to alter your voice or perform major surgery on your words. We are simply tasked with enforcing the guidelines and correcting only what is essential for clarity and maintaining professional standards. Editors are also writers, so the more time you can save them, the more time they will have to contribute to the website and that's a good thing.

Editor, Kurt Ellenberger is a long-time Grammarly user and had this to say about the service and its evolutions...

I’ve been using Grammarly for student papers for many years. Its suggestions were hit and miss, but good enough for student papers, but not for much else. That changed with their new AI app that works within my browsers, email, text, and documents. It is very strong—basically like having a good human editor. It finds major and minor typos and other errors, but what is really impressive is its editorial suggestions, which are nuanced and sophisticated. I highly recommend it—it is a game-changing new resource for me. My experience is that I accept about half of the suggestions. I reject the other half largely because they change the "voice" of the author too much, which I want to retain. (There are also a small percentage of suggestions that are inappropriate or incorrect.)
