How All About Jazz Uses Artificial Intelligence for Content Generation
All About Jazz has embraced technology since its founding in 1995. Born on the internet, the site has continually adopted and leveraged evolving technologies to better serve the jazz community. It’s one of the reasons why we’re still here.
Apprehension about artificial intelligence is understandable. Like any tool, AI can be misused—but at All About Jazz, we use it thoughtfully to support our mission, realize our vision, and, occasionally, to have a little fun along the way.
Transparency is essential. If an article published on All About Jazz is AI-generated, the byline will clearly reflect that. Rather than an author taking credit for AI-written work, the byline will read:
Concept by [Author Name] | Written by AI”
This approach ensures honesty with our readers while properly crediting the human creativity behind the idea.
Not everyone has the experience or inclination to write a traditional article for All About Jazz—but everyone has the ability to imagine a compelling concept. In fact, the more imaginative or fantastical, the better. Projects like The Blue Note Portal, Django’s Cosmic Echo, and To Boldly Swing explore jazz through unexpected narratives, blending music with science fiction, alternate histories, and speculative worlds.
These stories are not meant to replace journalism, criticism, or human storytelling. They exist alongside our core editorial content as creative experiments—another way for the community to engage with jazz culture.
If you’d like to create an AI-assisted story, start by developing a premise. Outline your idea. Be specific about how the story should begin and end. Then provide clear direction to the AI tool of your choice (ChatGPT, Grok, or others). You can refine the results through additional prompts or edit the final text yourself.
At its core, this initiative is about opening the door wider—giving more members of the All About Jazz community a chance to tell jazz stories in new and imaginative ways.
Who Can Submit A Story
Any member can submit an AI-assisted story—writers and non-writers alike. You do not need prior publishing experience, but you do need a strong idea and an understanding of how to frame it as a story. Please read our What we are looking for page before considering a story submission.Common Questions / Concerns
Does this mean AI is replacing writers?
No.
AI-generated stories at All About Jazz are optional, clearly labeled, and limited to specific creative projects (e.g. Jazz Fiction). Our core editorial content—news, reviews, criticism, interviews, and reporting—remains written and edited by humans.
AI is a tool we use to help execute imaginative ideas, not a substitute for human insight, experience, or musical understanding.
Does AI lower All About Jazz’s editorial standards?
No.
Every piece published on All About Jazz—whether written by a human or generated with AI—remains subject to editorial oversight. We are not publishing unreviewed or automated content.
In fact, AI-assisted stories require more intentionality: a clear concept, thoughtful direction, and careful review before publication.
What if I don’t want to read AI-generated content?
AI-generated articles will always be clearly identified in the byline, allowing readers to make informed choices about what they read.
Is this a slippery slope?
We don’t believe so, because we’ve drawn clear boundaries.
AI at All About Jazz is used: transparently, purposefully and creatively.
It is not used to mass-produce content, replace contributors, or automate editorial judgment. If our use of AI evolves, we will communicate those changes openly.
Who gets credit for AI-generated stories?
Human creativity comes first.
That’s why AI-generated articles credit the originator of the idea, not the tool alone. Our bylines reflect this clearly:
Concept by [Author Name] | Written by AI
This acknowledges that while AI executes the writing, the imagination, direction, and intent come from a human contributor.
