PJ5et Special Project: High Tension

Il trio del pianista romano Pino Iodice è attivo da lungo tempo. Adesso con il supporto di due ospiti d'eccezione, Tommy Smith e Dick Oatts, pubblica un progetto di grande impatto grazie ad una ritmica che funziona perfettamente e all'inserimento dei due ospiti che avviene senza sforzo alcuno: il loro è uno scambio non solo musicale ma anche umano, in cui si riescono a mettere a punto degli equilibri sorprendenti.

La beatlesiana "Eleanor Rigby" è sicuramente una bella canzone ma nelle mani di questi musicisti diventa uno stupendo brano di jazz, che quasi meriterebbe di entrare fra gli standards. Le altre composizioni, alcune portate dagli ospiti, altre scritte dal leader sono anch'esse di alto livello. Creano un'atmosfera speciale, senza che il disco prenda direzioni improvvise in un senso o nell'altro, secondo i gusti dell'autore.

Tommy Smith, ritornato in Scozia dopo gli anni passati a New York (e le incisioni per la Blue Note) si rivela un solista prezioso, così come Dick Oatts, ambedue molto sensibili nell'interpretazione dei brani di Iodice, fra cui il riuscito "High Tension" di apertura. Pure loro danno un bel contributo - "Tree of Knowledge" dalla penna di Tommy Smith, "In Passing" di Dick Oatts - mettendo insieme un bell'equilibrio fra mente e cuore, fra dinamicità virtuosistica ed espressione, sfuggendo alla tentazione di fare affondare il tutto in una jam session più o meno riuscita.
