Sachal Vasandani: Hi-Fly

Vincitore nel Critics Poll 2010 di Down Beat nella categoria vocalist maschile emergente, Sachal Vasandani presenta il suo terzo disco dopo Eyes Wide Open del 2007 e We Move del 2009. Il trentenne cantante di Chicago, ma indiano d'origine, è un piacevole baritono dal timbro luminoso che ripropone con eleganza e partecipazione un repertorio che spazia da noti standard ("All the Way," "The Very Thought of You"), temi attuali ("Love Is a Losing Game" di Amy Winehouse), sue composizioni e brani ricercati come "Here Comes the Honey Man" da Porgy And Bess.

Nell'affollato panorama di giovani cool singers in equilibrio fra tradizione anni cinquanta e sensibilità pop, Vasandani ha tutte le carte in regola per acquisire una posizione di primo piano. Il suo canto non fa gridare al miracolo ma è convincente, comunicativo e dotato di buon gusto. Deve amare molto i jazz singers della tradizione ma ha evidenti doti naturali e s'esprime con inventiva e sensibilità contemporanea. Sul modello Mel Tormè è un suadente interprete di romantiche ballads e swinganti episodi in scat. Si presenta come un crooner confidenziale ma sa già affrontare con discreti risultati prove impegnative. In un paio di brani del disco lo troviamo in coppia con Jon Hendricks e se la cava egregiamente.

Oltre i due con Hendricks, i brani jazzisticamente più convincenti sono "All the Way," delicato e ricco di sfumature, e il davisiano "Babes Blues" dove la tromba di Ambrose Akinmusire ha modo d'emergere.
