DM Stith: Heavy Ghost

Dopo un Ep d'esordio, sempre per la Asthmatic Kitty per cui presta anche opera di grafico, David Michael - detto DM - Stith approda al primo disco importante, splendida occasione per conoscerne il songwriting obliquo e inafferrabile, figlio di un'inquietudine espressiva che trova sfogo in un sovrapporsi di forme e di spiritualità quasi arcana.

L'incipit di "Isaac's Song" è allucinato e wyattiano, ma anche nella successiva "Pity's Dance," apparentemente più "inquadrata" in una weirdness di matrice folk, spirano brezze fantasmatiche e oscure presenze. Ormai gli ormeggi con la tradizione si sono definitivamente rotti e i fili spezzati si attorcigliano alle gambe come filamenti di un blues primordiale la cui memoria si perde nel buio dei tempi.

Ecco dunque ritmiche scheletriche e incalazanti, tentativi di gospel amorfo, cosette struggenti come "Pigs" che stanno tutte in un paio di arpeggi ma ti prendono alla gola, il sabba rugginoso di "Spirit Parade" e le ipnosi malate di "Thanksgiving Moon," inchiostrate di psichedelia e di dilaniati spiazzamenti, quasi in una terra di nessuno tra Devendra Banhart e Sufjian Stevens, ma già così incredibilmente lontana da ciascuno di questi due poli esemplificativi, quasi splamata sullo sfondo stellato.

Ne vengono fuori ogni tanto di questi dischi, che non sai bene se sono geniali oppure hanno magari solo il merito di darci qualche colpetto che ci risveglia dal piattume ormai generalizzato in ogni angolo del mercato musicale. Vengono fuori così, come fiori dal colore improbabile e malsano, ma sono una vera delizia e non ci chiediamo il perché.
