Tal Cohen: Gentle Giants
Dal punto di vista dell'esecuzione, il pianoforte ha il ruolo del protagonista, e a tratti è quasi soverchiante. Cohen si ritaglia larghi spazi nei quali esprimersi in solitudine (scelta giustissima nella parte centrale di "Ducks"), accompagna in duo i fiati ("Lo Haya," "Chopin Mees Abach"), si prende lunghi soli sostenuto dal resto della ritmica ("Gavetsch"). Tutti i solisti hanno però briglia sciolta, sicché la centralità del pianoforte non mette in ombra gli altri strumenti. Al disco si può forse muovere una sola critica, ferma restando la sua elevata qualità complessiva: qualche episodio risulta verboso; un approccio più sintetico avrebbe giovato. In particolare, lo sviluppo interno dei soli di Cohen è in alcuni (pochi) casi ripetitivo (cfr. "Great PK" e "Gavetsch"), per quanto ineccepibile nella tecnica e nella drammaturgia. Sovrabondante è pure la serie di variazioni ritmiche sul tema alla fine di "Gavetsch."
Gentle Giants si colloca quindi nel solco d'una tradizione jazzistica pluridecennale, cui resta fedele senza scadere nel manierismo: musica di fattura solidissima.
