Gayle Ellett & The Electromags: Friends

In their 2023 offering, "Friends, The Electromags deliver a smorgasbord of instrumental rock that is as rich in variety as it is in talent. Think of it as a musical potluck, where every guest brings their best dish to the table. The thirteen tracks on this album are like thirteen assorted flavors of rock, each with its unique twist. It is a bit like a rock 'n' roll buffet, and everyone's invited.

Leading this eclectic ensemble is Gayle Ellett of Djam Karet fame, joined by the rhythmically adept duo of Craig Kahn and Mark Cook. They lay down the foundation for a parade of guest stars, including the virtuosic guitar stylings of Carl Weingarten and prog guitar demigod Barry Cleveland. These guys do not just play their instruments; they make them sing, weep, and occasionally scream in delight.

The album is like a musical road trip, journeying through experimental blues, prog rock, and classic rock, with a few jazz-infused detours. The tracks are packed with sophisticated musicianship that you might need a map to navigate through their radiant soundscapes. The album is a tip of the hat to the spirit of collaboration that fuels this musical journey.

Each track is a mini adventure. Take "The Many Moods of Morgan," where Brian Chapman's guitar solos howl and resonate with the kind of energy that could power a small city. Or "Maria's Lakeside Drive," where Cleveland's acoustic and electric guitar work weaves a tapestry of sound that's both intricate and a tad freaky due to his use of a bow-hammered electric guitar. It's like each musician is having a conversation, and we are lucky enough to be eavesdropping.

And then there is the finale, "1960 Ocean Front Walk," as Frederic L'Epee's guitar and Ellett's reverb-treated rhythm guitar phrasings paint a picture of a distant, dreamy place, with Cook's bass adding just the right amount of groove. It is like ending your journey with a sunset view, reflecting on the road traveled.

The production quality of "Friends is like the cherry on top. It strikes the perfect balance between clarity and warmth. This is not just an album; it's an aural odyssey that showcases The Electromags' evolution and their knack for crafting emotionally resonant music. It is a testament to the power of friendship and collaboration in creating something truly special. So, grab your headphones and prepare for a journey through the many shades of rock—you are in for a treat!
