Uri Gincel Trio: Free

Informazioni biografiche ridotte all'essenziale - di sé tiene a far sapere che è un pianista israeliano stabilitosi a Berlino nel 2009 -, Uri Gincel pare essere uno di quegli artisti che puntano poco sull'autore e molto sull'opera. E fa bene. Questo suo disco in trio ha un titolo solo all'apparenza programmatico: Free. All'ascolto poi si rivela tutt'altro rispetto alla promessa della copertina.

L'archetipo di questa formazione è senz'altro il trio di Jarrett, più ancora di quello evansiano. Del maestro di Allentown, Gincel riprende non solo certi stilemi, ma anche la gestione dell'interplay e la tendenza a suonare soli lunghi e costruiti. Gli si può forse criticare una certa prevedibilità nell'appoggiare gli accordi con la mano sinistra e il fatto che a volte l'intenzione di ricorrere a pattern riconoscibili gli sfugga dal controllo.

Ma dietro all'adesione ad un modello estetico evidente si celano scelte fortemente sperimentali. Non solo nella parte finale del disco, dove queste sono più appariscenti ("Free," l'improvvisazione che dà il titolo all'intero lavoro, "Avre tu porta cerrada"), ma anche in episodi apparentemente più tradizionali, come la virtuosistica resa di "If I Were a Bell" posta in apertura del CD. Si tratta di scelte che hanno direttamente a che fare con l'interplay: ad esempio, i giochi di accelerando e rallentando in cui pianoforte e batteria amano cimentarsi oppure i raddoppi improvvisi del tempo, originale lettura dell'eredità di Shelly Manne. E a proposito di batteria, Moritz Baumgardner sperimenta l'uso delle spazzole per dar vita a spiazzanti contrasti timbrici. Il pianoforte ha nettamente il ruolo di protagonista: ne è una prova lo studio sulle quartine che apre la quarta traccia, "July".

Anche la scelta del repertorio rimanda visibilmente alla lezione jarrettiana, seppure con inserzioni eccentriche, in specie coltraniane: basta un'occhiata alla lista dei brani per rendersene conto. Un omaggio diretto a Jarrett è, almeno a parere di chi scrive, la versione di "India," che ricorda molto da vicino la "God Bless the Child" del primo Standards Trio.
