Fo[u]r Alto: Four Compositions of Frank Gratkowski

Fo(u)r Alto occupa una posizione autonoma nell'ambito della formula per quattro sassofoni jazz. Il disco in esame ne testimonia una linea di ricerca del tutto particolare, volta a discostarsi dall'intreccio funzionale tra i vari timbri delle ance. Quello che rende originale quest'opera è l'aver rinunciato alla prevalente forma dialogica e contrappuntistica che aveva caratterizzato i modelli di riferimento (World Saxophone Quartet, Rova, 29th Street Saxophone Quartet).

Cambiano le regole perché scompare l'alternanza tra i quattro sax, qui tutti contralto. Ne vien fuori una sonorità di gruppo omogenea, che a dispetto di un più ridotto spettro timbrico produce un impatto armonico più ricco. Il segreto risiede nell'adozione della microtonalità elevata a formula di riferimento a cui si giustappone la libera improvvisazione. I colori tendono così a mutare di gradazione e tonalità nella fluida divisione dei ruoli all'interno del gruppo.

È una strada ardua ma felicemente portata a termine, che esalta il magistero tecnico dei musicisti guidati da Frank Gratkowski. Ne vien fuori un disco di assoluto valore dove prevale il senso della ricerca sulla dimensione calligrafica, purtroppo oggi dominante. Firmate dal leader, le quattro tracce sono l'esito felicissimo di una riflessione musicale profonda e coraggiosa, tutta da ascoltare e studiare.
